Three kvetches about Sherlock Series 3 scheduling

Late last week, BBC revealed the various worldwide release dates for Sherlock Series 3. The return of Sherlock early next year has left me with a series of my own — this one of gripes and complaints.

In no particular order [to avoid spoilers, skip to #2]:

1. Whoever is in charge of headlines over at Huffington Post clearly did not actually watch the existing episodes of Sherlock. Here’s a screengrab from the site:

Sherlock Huff Po

Sherlock Shocker? Go ahead: shock me.

Well, here’s the article‘s lede (which Firefox does not recognize as a word):

Sherlock, dead? Not so fast.

In the new “Sherlock” Season 3 trailer, Sherlock is very alive.

SHOCKER!

Just kidding — here’s a screenshot from the closing scene of Series 2:

Sherlock Series 2.3

That’s Sherlock. He’s alive, in the act of observing Watson leave his own grave. No story here. But maybe watch the show if you’re gonna write about it.

2. The next two are related to actual scheduling issues. For reference, here’s the complete list of premiere dates made available so far, helpfully provided by Sherlockology:

February 15 2014 (Time TBC) – S3E3: His Last Vow

That’s all very nice – you’ve got Poland, Sweden, Belgium… but how about the important one: When’s all this gonna hit Netflix??

3. And if you think, “It’s airing on PBS, you can just watch it on TV when it comes out.” Technically true. But two problems: one, I try to only watch TV while I run, and 7PM and 10PM (I’m traveling East after the 19th) are not particularly friendly to my exercise regime. Two, I get that this is a British show and all, but are you really sure it was the best idea to schedule Series 3: Episode 3 in the United States on Super Bowl Sunday?

Even if the idea was that people would already be sitting in front of their televisions, Sherlock is currently scheduled to air at a time when the Super Bowl will likely still be going. The big game starts at 6:30 EST, which gives Sherlock just three and a half hours before there’s any conflict. Just one problem: the average Super Bowl lasts longer than that — and that number was calculated before last year’s power outage/delay of game knocked that average up. Hope they wrote that airtime in pencil.
