Oxford just pulled a fast one on Facebook

Late last night, Facebook reported that the Oxford English Dictionary added a number of new words including “vape, listicle and binge-watch”:

Fooling Facebook - Oxford English Dictionary circled

Two quick problems with this.

First, Facebook got the characters all wrong. The publication that added words like Hot Mess, Side Boob, and Throw Shade was not the Oxford English Dictionary at all. Instead, it was Oxford Dictionaries, whose website states unequivocally that “this site (www.oxforddictionaries.com) is not the Oxford English Dictionary (OED).” Sure, they’re related, but one does expect greater precision from news coverage of a dictionary.

Second, when you’re writing about the OED, you sort of have to use the Oxford comma.
