Just over two months ago, a pair of 206 heroes showed up to a talk by NBA Commissioner David Stern sporting Seattle SuperSonics swag and convinced him to pose for a picture. Unsurprisingly, the result made its way to Reddit — courtesy of @joeandtell — where it received overwhelmingly positive attention. But it also attracted one comment that annoyed me so much I decided to respond two months and a week later:
- Who appointed JohnnyNumbskull in charge of determining who is and who isn’t a real Seattleite?
- If these two were not yet real Seattleites, they should at least receive honorary citizenship for their role in creating the above photograph (as put more eloquently in the above thread by Sonicsgate).
- Finally, the title of the post notes that the two non-Sterns in the photo attend college in New York. Recall that the Sonics haven’t played in Seattle since 2008, nearly seven years ago. Mightn’t an equally — if not more — reasonable guess be that the individual under discussion owned a Sonics shirt back in 2008 but has outgrown it since? I’m obviously speculating, but it does seem, JohnnyNumbskull, like the more Seattley approach would have been the charitable one aka takes not-one to know not-one.
