The New York Times published an article Monday describing New Jersey governor Chris Christie’s propensity to enjoy expensive luxuries paid for by wealthy acquaintances:
The governor, a Republican now preparing a run for president, shot to national prominence as a cheese-steak-on-the-boardwalk Everyman who bluntly preached transparency and austerity as the antidote to bloated state budgets. But throughout his career in public service, Mr. Christie has indulged a taste that runs more toward Champagne at the Four Seasons.
He has also quietly let others pay the bills.
The article opens by relating an episode in which Christie & Fam. traveled to Israel on Sheldon Adelson’s private jet. The Times strongly insinuates that Adelson was courting Christie because “he was opposing legislation then before the governor to legalize online gambling in New Jersey.”
However, I think the Grey Lady overlooked a perhaps equally-important reason, one more directly connected to the sponsored trip to Israel: Adelson was also interested in grooming the potential Republican candidate for President as a supporter of the Jewish State. And it seems to have worked. Want proof?
And here’s Adelson accepting a tzedaka box at a StandWithUs fundraiser in 2013:
Something tells me Sheldon won’t use it to collect pennies.
