On last night’s Nightly Show, Larry Wilmore took a few swings at Presidential candidate Ted Cruz, and one in particular failed to find its mark. Wilmore noted that Cruz announced his candidacy like so:
Said Larry: “Presidential announcements don’t happen at midnight. Booty calls happen at midnight, all right. And other than the backseat of your Hyundai Elantra, there’s no better place to hook up than at a college.” And it just so happens that Cruz opened his campaign in earnest with a speech at Liberty University. College kids these days, am I right?
Not so fast.
Wilmore’s joke might have worked at most American colleges, but unfortunately not at the one where Cruz actually was. According to Liberty’s Honor Code, “Misconduct that is contrary to the teachings of the Christian faith and constitutes a violation of the law school’s Personal Code of Honor includes, but is not limited to . . . [n]on-marital sexual relations.” There are definitely better places to hook up than at Liberty University.
Indeed, were Larry himself a student there, joking about booty calls alone would have constituted a violation of the Honor Code, which also notes that “the encouragement or advocacy of any form of sexual behavior that would undermine the Christian identity or faith mission of the University constitute morally inappropriate sexual misconduct.”
Liberty, I think it’s time we talked about the name of your University. After all, you keep using that word, but I do not think it means what you think it means.
